About Wavertree Racing Club
Wavertree Racing Club was formed in 2002 as a spin off of the The National Stud Owner Breeders Club to enable members who were interested to be involved in racehorse ownership by purchasing the progeny bred by the Breeders Club and putting them in training.
The original horse purchased by the Club was Wavertree Boy, a 2000 chesnut gelding by Hector Protector ex Lust, bred by the National Stud in Newmarket (as the property of the Owner Breeders’ Club as mentioned above) and purchased at the Tattersalls October Yearling Stales in 2001. Wavertree Boy is owned by Syndicate A of Wavertree Racing Club. For more details on Wavertree Boy, click here.
Three more horses were purchased at the Sales a year later, Wavertree Dream, Wavertree Girl and Wavertree Spirit and they were owned by the members in Wavertree Racing Club Syndicate B. Wavertree Girl was sold as a brood mare in 2004 and Wavertree Spirit is now at Moorcroft Welfare Centre for the rehabilitation of ex-racehorses, for more details click here.
Wavertree Dream changed ownership in 2004 to The Dream Partnership to enable members who wanted to continue with him for another year to do so. He, like Wavertree Boy was bred by the National Stud in Newmarket, he is a bay gelding by Dushyantor, out of Dream on Deya. He won at Newmarket as a two year old when trained by Nick Littmoden then didn’t run as a three year old due to intermittent lameness. He is now trained by John Best near Maidstone in Kent. Two more horses, Wavertree One Off and Wavertree Warrior were purchased at the Sales in 2003. One Off is by Diktat ex Miss Clarinet.and he is related to Wavertree Spirit and Warrior is by Indian Lodge ex Karamana and is related to Wavertree Dream. All three Syndicates, A, B & C ran initially for two years with members paying an all-in one-off price of £500 for membership in A and £1,000 for B & C. For this members get:
- An equal share in the ownership of the horse/s
- A personal certificate, an exclusive metal badge
- Regular updates and newsletters
- An information line
- Stable and Gallop visits
- Reduced price Owners & Trainers badges
- Hospitality whenever possible.
Towards the end of the 2 year term all members are consulted to establish the level of support in
extending ownership of the horses. If there is a viable majority we continue and members who do not wish to carry on then receive an equal share of the sale/valuation price plus their share of the dividend, prize money etc after expenses.
The Club has enabled members to own racehorses at a very modest cost and follow the racing careers of horses that the majority have been involved with from birth. Given all the pitfalls familiar to owners and breeders of racehorses it is acknowledged that we have been extremely lucky to even have all our horses make it onto the racecourse let alone to have the bonus and excitement of visiting the winners enclosure as often as we have.
Yet along this, at times, rocky road of racehorse ownership the most important element has always been having fun and proof of this is the large number of friendships that have been struck up amongst the members. In addition to our many racedays, we also enjoyed
- Trips to Paris and Ireland along with many other social events
- Visits to various racing establishments including
- Weatherbys
- The Animal Health Trust
- Horseracing Forensic Laboratory
- The Equine Fertility Unit
- And many others
Our present standing of 6 wins and 16 places, including 2 Listed from 52 runs, amongst them one Group 1, three Group 3’s and three Listed shows how fortunate we have been with our small band of modestly bought horses. However success on the racecourse is not gained at any cost and priority has always been given to the welfare of the horses, especially when they reach the end of their careers, pictures of Wavertree Spirit (please click here) taken recently at Moorcroft express this much better than any words could ever say. Likewise our members have also been very supportive of various racing charities and vote every year to select their beneficiaries.
