WAVERTREE ONE OFF
(2002 b. g. by Diktat ex Miss Clarinet)

Bred by the National Owner Breeders’ Club and originally sold as a foal for 3,000 guineas, Wavertree One Off was purchased by Wavertree Racing at the Tattersalls Ireland Yearling Sale at Fairyhouse in October 2003. He is a member of the first crop of the former Champion Sprinter Diktat. Purchased by Wavertree Racing Club for 7,500 euros, he looked good value, as Diktat’s yearling colts in 2003 averaged 25,518 guineas where sold at public auction.

Diktat’s first crop had a reasonably promising season on the racecourse as two year olds, with three of his offspring gaining Black Type. He had one Group winner in Diktatorial, who landed the Group 3 Somerville Tattersalls Stakes at Newmarket in September 2004. His filly Favourita was placed twice in Black Type races in 2004, 2nd in the Listed Oh So Sharp Stakes at Newmarket and 3rd in the Group 2 Rockfel Stakes, also at Newmarket. The last of the trio is the colt Fox, who gained 3rd place in the Group 2 Vintage Stakes at Goodwood.

Wavertree One Off

Wavertree One Off was trained by David Elsworth, first in Whitsbury and then at Egerton Stables in Newmarket.

A big, rangy horse who did not run as a two year old, David being more concerned to allow him time to grow into his frame rather than to push him on to a racecourse before he was ready.

Starting off in his career as a three year old he beat only one horse home on his debut at Newmarket, however he gradually showed promise, firstly beating three and then six home in decent Maidens at Sandown and Windsor before finishing 5th of 14 on his fourth run and according to his jockey Brett Doyle he would have finished in the placings had he not slipped on the bend in the soft ground.

Unfortunately he was not able to build on this in his next race when his saddle slipped forwards in the first furlong yet despite this ill-fated and dangerous occurrence he showed amazing temperament as he continued hazardously for the rest of the two miles and yet still managed to finish the race and not in last position.

On his next race a month later he again finished 5th, this time less than 2l behind the winner with the following quote in te Racing Post "Wavertree One Off ran well enough to suggest he can make a mark on this surface".

He is a lovely mover with an excellent temperament and the general feeling seems to be that he has National Hunt stamped all over him.
